Book-reading party with P.E.O.’s Chapter T, Winnipeg
It was such a pleasure to present a book-reading program to the P.E.O. Sisterhood’s Chapter T in Winnipeg on September 28, 2022.
It was good turnout for Chapter T’s meeting, with 20 members gathering for a post-Covid get-together at the home of hostess Sue Aysan.
P.E.O. is a philanthropic educational organization where women celebrate the advancement of women; educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans, and stewardship of a four-year women’s university, Cottey College, in Missouri, United States; and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations. Winnipeg’s Chapter T is well-known in Manitoba for its strong support for such projects as P.E.O.’s Program for Continuing Education, Educational Loan Fund, International Peace Scholarship, Scholar Awards, Star Scholarship, and Cottey College.
Following the group’s regular meeting, which I attended as a member of P.E.O. (Chapter M, Winnipeg, is my home chapter), I presented a thirty-minute program with the help of my P.E.O sister, Marion Inskip, Chapter T. Marion and I served on P.E.O.’s provincial board together for several years and I was grateful for Marion’s help during my presentation. Marion shared some notes on my career and my 2021 transition to writing novels.
To open the program, I shared details about the collaborative process that occurs once the author is ready to publish. Up to the point of producing the book, writing, in my case, was – and still is – a solitary journey. Once it is time to produce the physical print and digital products, however, it is time to bring in other professionals. I explained that achieving a quality product for Indie authors and small independent publishers like Birdsgate Publishing entails the use of various skills, such as logo design, website design, editing, cover design, and interior book formatting.
Within a thirty-minute program, I then shared a 10-question Regency history quiz with Chapter T members. Kudos to Sue Aysan, who scored eight correct answers and won a signed copy of The Brantford Wagers for her home library. Well done, Sue!
I closed the program by reading an excerpt from The Brantford Wagers, Chapter Six, ‘Meeting at the River’, depicting a significant incident between two of the main characters.
It was a privilege to attend a chapter meeting and deliver a program for the first post-Covid in-person meeting of Chapter T. Thank you to Chapter T for the invitation to deliver your program for this meeting. I was delighted to hear about your plans and projects for the coming year. I was honoured to hear some of the personal news of members, some joyful and some difficult. Very best wishes to each of you as we approach the new year.

Are you interested in hosting an author-reading for your book club or charitable organisation? I may be able to attend local events in person in my home city and neighbouring communities. For events online, it’s a simple matter to invite me to attend online using Zoom or other digital meeting platforms. I’d be pleased to chat with you about opportunities to build in a fund-raising opportunity into the program for charitable purposes for registered organisations.
