Charlie Reyne has been launched!
And what fun it was to gather with presenters and friends to introduce the second book in the Brantford Series.
The celebration was held online September 22, 2024. I opened the Zoom call from my home in Winnipeg, Manitoba and guests registered from locations near and far (you can check out the map in the video). Thank you so much, presenters and participants/readers! I appreciate each one of you.
If you missed the party, you can settle in with your favourite refreshments and enjoy the celebration at your leisure. The program ran for an hour and 17 minutes and included: an introduction by my wonderful hosts, Evelyn Kampen and Ali Kampen; a heartfelt welcome to Vivian Shannon, my mom, to whom the book is dedicated; and remarks from guest presenters Elaine Shannon, Nancy Dyck, and Bev Adam as well as my technical editor Nicky Galliers. We welcomed our guests, introduced my awe-inspiring production team, and tipped our hats to other authors who joined the call or sent their greetings.
Introducing Birdsgate Publishing’s
Regency History Quiz No. 2
Part of the launch fun for participants, and for me in preparing it, was the Regency History Quiz No. 2. (Quiz No. 1 was delivered during The Brantford Wagers online launch celebration.)
Our guests tracked their answers to 10 tricky questions shared by Elaine, Ali, and Evelyn, self-scored their results, and posted to the chat. Our three deserving winners with awesome scores won author-signed copies of Charlie Reyne. Interestingly, our prize winners (two who live in Manitoba and one who lives in the UK) have all lived in Europe. Cindy Larsen’s correct answers had her taking home second place. Cindy lived in England for two years. First-place winners Lisa Renner (born in Switzerland) and Nicky Galliers (living in London), perhaps held a slight advantage over other participants when it came to general British history trivia questions, like what did the words ‘Brown Bess’ refer to during the Regency period? Care to try the quiz yourself? Refer to the Time Map below to locate the quiz on the video recording.
Author Reading from Charlie Reyne
After an introduction of the author by Nancy, Nadine read some pages from novel for the enjoyment of listeners. Nadine read an excerpt from the first chapter, Behind the Drums, and from the fourth chapter, Hospital Camp in Oporto, introducing the principal characters of the story. You can locate the author-reading sections within the video using the Time Map below.
Q&A
Lastly, I responded to questions from guests in a Q&A session facilitated by Bev. Topics included my interest in the historical Regency time period as the setting for my stories, the particular challenges I faced in writing this novel due to overlapping time periods with the first book, the type of research I had done to give an authentic feel to depictions of the theatre of war in Spain and transportation aboard a war ship, and whether in writing I drew on personal experience. Check out the Q&A section close to the end of the program.
The link to the video recording of the launch is shown on the Charlie Reyne book page as well as in this post so you can find it easily in the future.
